Job Description
As a School-Based Registered Nurse (RN), you will play a critical role in safeguarding student health, supporting wellness initiatives, and ensuring that students can fully participate in their educational experience. From managing chronic health conditions and providing first aid to leading health education and promoting preventive care, school nurses are vital advocates for the well-being of students and the school community.
As a travel school nurse, you’ll take on short-term assignments in school districts across the country, bringing your skills to communities with immediate needs. This role provides a rewarding opportunity to expand your professional experience, adapt to diverse school settings, and make a meaningful impact on student health and success.
Key Responsibilites
Provide Direct Student Care: Assess and treat students for illnesses, injuries, and health-related concerns that arise during the school day.
Manage Chronic Conditions: Develop and oversee health care plans for students with conditions such as asthma, diabetes, and severe allergies.
Support IEP and 504 Plans: Participate in individualized education program (IEP) and 504 meetings, ensuring student health needs are addressed in educational planning.
Health Education and Prevention: Promote wellness by educating students, staff, and families on topics such as hygiene, nutrition, and disease prevention.
Emergency Response: Provide immediate care for health emergencies and ensure proper protocols are followed in crisis situations.
Medication Administration: Safely administer medications and treatments in accordance with physician orders and school policies.
Documentation and Compliance: Maintain accurate health records and ensure compliance with district, state, and federal health regulations.
Collaborate with School Teams: Work with educators, administrators, counselors, and parents to support the overall well-being and success of students.
Adapt to School Environments: Transition smoothly into new school settings during travel assignments while maintaining consistent, high-quality care.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of practice (or eligibility)
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred
CPR and First Aid certification required
Previous experience in pediatric, public health, or school-based nursing preferred
Knowledge of IEP and 504 processes a plus
Strong communication, assessment, and organizational skills
Flexibility to adapt to diverse school settings and student populations
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of recent experience as an RN in an school setting.
